Yes, we eloped! September 29th, 2011 at the amazing Willard Street Inn in Burlington, Vermont. We were married by the lovely Lainey Rappaport, Burlington Justice of the Peace, in a short ceremony in the rain on a balcony overlooking the Inn's gardens.
Our families knew ahead of time, as well as a few of our friends. This turned out to be the best option for both of us - it honored our love of travel and new settings, as well as suiting some more logistical needs for our jobs. We flew to Burlington on Sept. 28th (with Trey Anastasio from Phish on our flight!), drove up to Quebec City on the 30th, and then down to Montreal on Oct 3rd, before flying home on the 4th.
Surprisingly enough, neither of us had ever been to Canada, so exploring the large and diverse province of Quebec was an excellent escape. We saw some amazing fall foliage, drank great wine, ate nearly too much cheese, took a ton of photos, walked our feet off, mispronounced copious amounts of French, navigated only using a National Geographic atlas, rode a funicular, and did quite a bit of whining about coming home in the last 24 hours of the trip. Burlington in particular was an unexpected surprise - we loved it so much that we started to contemplate whether we could potentially survive that kind of winter.
Ben started his new, awesome job today (Wednesday, the day after returning home) so it will take us a minute to get some photos and anecdotes together for your viewing pleasure...but stay tuned!
